In response to “Dubbed or subtitled?” this is an American dub, but it’s good. I believe Pioneer was in charge of the ‘restoration’ and retranslation of this version (before it was licensed to Funimation), and they didn’t cut corners. This is coming from someone who almost always refuses to by dubbed versions. It doesn’t hurt though, that I grew up with ‘Akira’ and ‘Ghost in the Shell’ on VHS, both dubbed versions, and both done well. This was back in the day when that was the only option. However, I’m completely with you, and feel 99% of anime dubs are disasters. The other note on this: ‘Akira’ was initially listed here for $2.99 for approximately three days. Those who were late getting on board found the new price at $9.99, which is still a good deal. I hope this helps. Enjoy.

But why is this under tv shows and not in films?
  • A film, not a tv show.

This is essential anime for anyone who is into science fiction. Now where's "Jin Roh" , "Ghost in the Shell 2:innocence", and especially "Neon Genesis Evangelion". Also classics.

I was a touch bewildered by “Akira” being classed as a TV show, but I didn’t dwell too long on it. I liked the fact that it was 10 bucks. But after skimming the reviews, I feel terrible for not being initially repulsed by it’s classing. It made me wonder if I was being too dispassionate for someone who considers themselves a fan. So now, I’m disgusted and enraged by this flagrant and utter debauchery. Are we mere beasts? Whom crawl on all fours and forage carrion, purchasing whatever scraps we find on iTunes? Please, restore order within your digital domain and put ‘Akira’ in the Movie section.

Anime broke through in the good old usa with Akira, plain simple, without that no Toonami and no other forms would even come close.

That is the most lackluster/missed the point description for this movie. It's hard to really describe I guess, but it was ground breaking has influenced live action movies to this day. That's movie, not TV show. Sigh
  • Why?

I love this movie, but why is it labeled under TV shows? Akira is a movie not a show, it originally aired in theaters. Maybe it's under here because it aired on the Sci-fi channel, either way this needs to be fixed.

This is a masterpiece of Japanese Anime, plain and simple. I just don’t understand why it’s listed on iTunes as a TV show. It is a full length movie.

As a kid I watched movies like Ghost in the Shell and played many games of the sub genre cyberpunk, but never had a real appreciation for it until now. I’m 27 years old and today was the first day I ever watched Akira. It was so good even almost 30 years later that I had to buy it. The graphics and artistic representation, the script and how you are brought into this world and made to feel a part of it. Absolutely stunning achievement on so many levels. I have a new found appreciation for anime and I have begun researching everything and anything worth watching.

First off, no I am not a Kanye West fan, yes I do agree that this is in fact better than Spirited Away! This is truly a one-of-a-kind movie that was able to accomplished (visually) what live action couldn't before CGI (not to say the practical effects of movies like The Thing, Star Wars and Alien(s) weren't magnificent!) Plus the script works in such a way that it is impossible to classify it in a single genre of film! It seamlessly blends elements of science fiction, action, (body) horror, dystopian future and a bit of political thriller into something that works as just about each one, which I consider an amazing feat considering many films struggle to mix two genres like action and horror (looking at you Resident Evil). Not to mention that the animation could male Lion King sit in a corner and pout (I apologize but yes I did have to go there) while still retaining a certain retro 80's charm that I just cannot resist (I'm a bit 80's guy)! What are you waiting for, watch this movie already, and if you have seen it before, see it again! You owe it to yourself'

This is so well-animated, but I didn't understand it at all. I watched it more than halfway through but I had to stop because it made absolutely no sense. I could not follow the sorry at all...

This is the latter dubbed version and it's alright, but the original english translated version was better in my opinion than this one. Still a great movie though.
