  • Is Disney Channel becoming the new Cartoon Network?

Ever since the new decade started, many of Cartoon Network's alumni have migrated to Disney's TV animation department: acclaimed creators such as Maxwell Atoms (Billy & Mandy), C.H. Greenblatt (Chowder), Tom Warburton (Kids Next Door), Craig McCracken (The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends) and George Krstic (Megas XLR) as well as other top-level artists including Rob Renzetti, Chris Savino, Craig Lewis and Charlie Bean have made the House of Mouse their new home. To be honest, this exodus of talent didn't get off in the right foot. The Disney Channel's 2010 animated series Fish Hooks features the talents of Atoms, Greenblatt and Warburton; unfortunately, the show itself is generic, uninspired and completely lacking the artistic vision which defined their respective CN shows, instead feeling like an animated version of the channel's obnoxious tweencoms. Quite frankly, it made me wonder if these artists -- undeniably talented as they are -- were simply looking for a steady paycheck in unstable economic times. Gravity Falls is the complete anti-thesis of all that. The animation, art style and humor of this series are exactly what I'd expect from a collaboration of industry veterans such as Atoms and Greenblatt, yet ironically they're not involved with this production; instead, it comes from a relative newcomer named Alex Hirsch. Hirsch previously contributed storyboards to Cartoon Network's Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack and helped develop Fish Hooks before receiving his big break. Quite frankly, going from Fish Hooks to this is a quantum leap. There is some Flapjack influence on display, but the art is cleaner and the humor is nowhere near as disturbing or nightmarish. It will also draw comparisons to CN's current heavyweights Adventure Time and Regular Show, yet this feels more innocent and less overtly self-aware. Like another reviewer said, it is almost a perfect fusion of Cartoon Network's absurdist humor and Disney's classic heart. It also has the Disney production values to match; your jaw will drop constantly at the lushness and details of the backgrounds. We've only begun to meet these characters, but they all have tremendous potential. Dipper is the smart and down-to-earth protagonist while Mabel is the wacky and free-spirited companion, yet these key traits are presented without becoming overbearing or threatening to negate other aspects of their personalities. And there seems to be genuine affection in their brother-sister relationship, something rarely seen in many kids cartoons. Another thing I appreciate is the apparent 22-minute runtime for each story instead of 11-minute segments. The latter has been the standard for every single comedy-driven kids cartoon -- Foster's is literally the only exception I can think of, and it made excellent use of it's extra time with smarter writing and and moments of surprising poignancy. Gravity Falls might follow in it's footsteps if the first episode is any indication. As of 2012, the aforementioned exodus of talent has begun to show it's true passion. Disney XD's Motorcity (written by Krstic and story-edited by Lewis) and Tron Uprising (directed by Charlie Bean) have become surprise favorites with action-animation buffs, especially the former with it's Titmouse production design and action setpieces. Sometime in the future, The Disney Channel will add Wander Over Yonder by McCracken and his equally-talented wife Lauren Faust to it's lineup. Right now, however, Gravity Falls is the big winner of Disney's new TV animation direction.

Wow. Usually Disney shows are cheesy and just not really funny. This show is EXACTLY the opposite! I'm really hoping it does well, as it has a lot of potential to be great!

On the surface, you might think this is just another show for children. This is definitely not your typical inane cartoon full of annoying, immediately forgettable, screeching characters that is so prevalent on television these days. Once you scratch the surface, I think you'll appreciate that there are several layers here. The animation is very well done, the characters are developing nicely, and everyone is a bit off. There's definitely something weird going on, and the audience is being slowly exposed to what that is. Mabel is hilarious, and there are plenty of pop culture references that poke fun at just about everything. Do yourself a favor and just give it a watch. GRAPPLING HOOK!

I love it. I've been waiting for Disney Channel to come out with a new cartoon, and this takes the cake. A sort of retro mystery cartoon, that adds hilarity into each episode. I 'm happy to see a non- singing- whiny- wannabe- tween sitcom on Disney Channel. It's not just what I wanted, it's what Walt would have wanted. He'd want to keep creating funny and lifelike characters that everyone can enjoy.

Gravity Falls is one of my all time favorite TV shows, especially because of the fanbase and the basic concept behind it. This show is definitely good for theorists, with constant hidden messages and secret codes. I’m not handing out spoilers, so I’ll just leave it at that- Gravity Falls is good for all ages, and can really get you thinking more than other cartoons. I would recommend this to everyone!

I started watching this show, and thought it would just be another Disney XD flop. Boy, was I wrong. It is funny, original, and packed full with adult jokes. Good for all ages, and a great show in general. Good job, Hirsch. You’ve really done a good job, and I’m so excited for Volume 2.

I love this show. It's fantastic. But I have to ding it a star for the way Disney packaged it. Splitting it into four sets at $20 apiece was brilliant, guys. No, wait… not brilliant. GREEDY. I was so excited to see this set go on sale for $10 that I bought it without hesitating, thinking I was getting the full first season. BZZT! I don't know that I'll ever buy the rest of the show here because I'm so disgusted by their greed.
