This is a learning tool. The way history channel does it is amazing.
  • Over the top

This will surely have great production values and tell something of a compelling story but the hubris that inevitably accompanies the idea that one can successfully summarize the story of America in a half-day is telling of the lack of historical context with which Americans approach their past. Simply the fact that this series will start at the Revolutionary War and not give a serious look into the roughly three hundred years before it (and that only takes into account the history of the New World) is evident of a lack of a really serious focus on capturing a holistic view. The comment that the French were the actual designers and makers of the Statue of Liberty made by another reviewer is a good example of the shortsightedness of the makers of this program. Not to make a jab at the Framers but the ideals of liberty and freedom are not uniquely American virtues; most of the ideas that are found in the Constitution were directly derived from previous writings made in France and Britain. Besides, those ideals should ultimately be seen as universal, not things America can lay sole claim to. America has succeeded in many ways in large part because of its ideals and its people but a celebration of success is certainly not the same thing as a history.
  • I Cannot Wait for This

Finally! I've been waiting to see this for months. Can't Wait for Sunday. I'm glad the History Channel finally decided to release a show about history again instead of another ridiculous reality show about fat sweaty men going to work and cursing at one another as well as end of the world doomsday prophecy crap thats past off for fact. This is the old history channel that I remebered and loved. Please go back to shows like this. Finally I'm so proud that our story is finally being told in an honest and hopefully unbiased light. Thank You History Channel

The statue of liberty was made by the French as a gift to America to exhibit national relations of friendliness. It was disassembled for shipment across the Atlantic Ocean and then rebuilt here in America.

  • History Critics?

    By Make America Great Again
We'll see about the quality of the show. Hopefully, although not expectedly, the History Channel will stop the trend of simply bashing the founders of this country, and those who have made it great sense. Slavery, although a terrible thing and a dark spot on the history of the world, can in no way be likened to the Jewish holocaust. Secondly, America suffered and sacrificed more to abolish slavery than any other nation in history. In less than one hundred years, our nation, thanks to the brilliant wording of the constitution and the foresight of the founders, forever abolished slavery in American, despite the massive cost in lives and industry. Let's never forget that far more Americans died in the defense of the Union and in opposition to slavery than slaves died at the hands of their masters. It doesn't make it right, but it speaks more to the human quality of America that we abolished it like we did than that it existed here (long before we became an independent country). Hopefully, the History channel will also acknowledge the fundamental role that religion and capitalism played in making this country great.
  • Really...?

    By Gerry Conedy
I think it has the potential to be a great show I'm just concerned about how they will feature the slave history of the United States. If the show treats the American slavery episode as simply an unjust "forced labor" narrative, then I will be exceedingly disappointed... Slavery in the United States was on par with the Jewish Holocaust...anyone who doesn't believe that simply DOESN'T know American Slave History.

  • Love it

So good. Flashbacks to middle school substitute teacher days. Except apparently now "educational videos" are no longer signals for nap time... What was once a God awful genre filmed specifically to keep all teens asleep for an hour -- is now apparently an awesome series. Yup, watch it. Grab a beer this time (stop feeling guilty you eleven-teen year olds)!

This is not a great "documentary" in terms of its ability to engage critical issues, deliver accurate facts, or cover a multitude of historic events. However, as a middle school teacher, I will say that it is a good "resource" to supplement your classroom instructions. I teach the history, and then use certain clips (usually ones with good, exciting graphics/visuals) to help students envision what they learn. Those who are disappointed with the actual history have right to complain. Don't watch it if you are already knowledgeable in American History! Also, I would consider this production as modern day propaganda by the victors - history is written by the victors - and would consider viewing it critically (probably in a AP class or even college setting) in that sense. The film is littered with talk of misconcieved American myths - "the self made man," "the land of freedom," "working harder and persevering through all conditions" to name some examples. It is apologetic of scarring incidents like the treatment of Native Americans and slavery, but, in a sense, the show still indoctrinates the American message.
  • Commentary is HORRIBLE

    By stevec12
When I watch a documentary, I like to hear commentary and analysis from people who actually know what they're talking about, not some egotist like Trump or Giuliani. I find it extremely disturbing that they have replaced noted historians and experts with celebrities. Find something produced by PBS, not this crap.

  • Amazing!!

Ever since I saw this on the History Channel, I fell in love. This is a great show that portrays the historic events in an entertaining way, but also educating you at the same time. The way they show stories within a story is what I find great about it the most. I like how they start from the very beginning, usually you'll find a BORING documentary that doesn't give you all the facts but this one keeps you on the edge of your seat and gives you a while bunch of info.I'm in AP US History currently and my teacher plays this for us and everyone in my class finds it entertaining. Words cannot explain how great this is, I highly recommend this to everyone you learn so much when you watch this!
  • ah nooooooooo!!!!!! I wan to see this!!

Brilliantly produced. Beautiful and engaging. Like me, if you are not an American but are fascinated by the short, 300 year old, actioned packed history of this country, you will LOVE this series. MUST BUY!!
  • Good to know

    By SMSZa
This is a fun documentary and I enjoyed it. I think Americans should watch and be proud of their heritage again. It is and was a land filled with all kinds of people who sought freedom and opportunity. Maybe this will help inspire the next generation of pioneers in American history.
  • Pretty Good

We watched this in school and I thought it was going to be boring but it turned out to be actually pretty good.
