The 2016 storyline is fact-driven and extremely interesting. Unfortunately, the 2033 is overly dramatic and reminiscent of a bad cheeseball pop-sci movie. This could have been an excellent show but sadly fails to deliver.

I think the blend between factual footage and future fictional footage is entirely appropriate for what this show encompasses. It illustrates that past fact and future is so connected when it comes to topics like this. The inclusion of past happenings solidifies the magnitude of future achievement which the future tale endeavors to tell us. The fictional future tale inspires the dream today which drives us to create the facts towards an actual reality. Besides big titles, indicating the year we're in, make it pretty clear where the show has jumped to. Can't wait for more!
  • So is it a documentary or a tv show?

Guess it has a hard time deciding what it wants to be. Documantary or TV show? Either way it plays out like the plot of a bad science-fiction B-movie. Some of the claims made are wildly speculative. Only saw this because the first episode was available for free on itunes.

The documentary portion is interesting, but the overly dramatic, over-acted, oh-so-very-serious docudrama part is painful to watch. The second episode was an order of magnitude worse than the first episode. Watch the free portion and save your money

Absolutely love this. I love the flashes between now and the future and how what we are creating and designing now could potentially lead to the events we are experiencing in the story line. I wish more tv shows were like this!!

If you want a more comprehensive "what if?" regarding our future with Mars, read Kim Stanley Robinson's "Red Mars", first of a three book series. It has the unpleasant, and inevitable political, drama stuff, but also, lots of hard SCI/FI... It's well written, and lots of fun: a fascinating, and hopeful story-line.

I really wanted to like this series. But it's excruciating to watch. The real life interviews are too long, and break up the story in abrupt and disconcerting ways. why not have these interviews at the end of each episode? Too disruptive. Also, the writing on the scripted part of the series is horribly stilted. Each character is 2 dimensional and shows no emotion. The directing is laughable. Was there no one taking a look at this series after it was done and saying Whoa, we have a problem?
  • Boring!

Great blend of documentary and narrative. Where the dreams of today forge the realities of tomorrow. I very much enjoyed it and am looking forward to future episodes.
  • So, I loved the first episode...

…but the second and third episodes I felt less enthusiastic about. Too much weak dramatic stuff. They should keep the fictional Mars mission stuff heavily steeped in scientific realism and detail, same for the documentary elements.

I enjoyed the mixture between the doc and drama like most people did. Yet I failed to deliver for the drama portions. It was a cool idea, don't get me wrong. The only drama portion I enjoyed was the Before Mars. Hana was a relatable character to me and all those space nerds out there. I believe that the doc portions and the Before Mars episode saved this tv show from the impending doom that the scripted drama portions had to offer. Overall I give it a 4 star rating. If you are looking for a better scripted show by Nat Geo go check out Genius.

The parts where it jumps back to documentary footage in the present day though it is interesting and technically works intersm of making the show much more realistic, are jarring and does interrupt the pace and drama. I also found some of the decsision that are made by characters not to make much sense, such as (spoiler alert) when they first land and the captain is injured, why did they not have the captain and the doctor and maybe one or two others stay with the lander, while the others went on to the base camp. That would have decreased the likelyhood of the rover breaking down and what happened tot he captain. However, in the end, I hope this series continues, it was well done and realistic and pulled me in,

If you love space. If you love drama. If you love eploration. You'll love Mars. I have to say It was made extremly well. The one thing I would say is that It feels rushed with only 6 episodes and Too little character progression and to much news like stuff. I was in the end wanting more so maby a new one about somthing else like interstelar travel or somthing would be great.
  • Too Short

You should watch this. A really well produced and unique blend of contemporary/historical documetnary and near future drama. The pacing is inconsistent, and at times it feels like a multi-season show that compressed into a mini series. Mars' strength is that while the documentary segments provide scientifc context for the drama, the drama provides emotional context for the documentary.

I loved everything about this series. I wish there was more to see.
  • This is supposed to inspire us?

Passionless crew making boneheaded mistakes. No way a commander would hide his injury. No way would a redundant wheeled rover die for one broken axel. Even if it was disabled, why transport the wounded commander by hand? Send a small team carrying nothing but O2 to get the OTHER rover at the base and bring him to the base! So stupid. The show is actually depressing about going to Mars. Too bad. This should be epic. Watch Apollo 13 if you want to see how it's done, now real NASA people go about solving problems.
  • Just another failure.

Like several of these series sold by iTunes, a TV series that takes off begins to tell a story, they abruptly gets cancelled mid story, two weeks now with no continuation. I bought this one, as I did Ascension and "Defying Gravity", but this will be my last buy of a TV series from iTunes, as the disappointment is getting a bit tiresome.
