Description

Crazy Rich Asians : "Crazy Rich Asians” follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick’s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. Being on Nick’s arm puts a target on Rachel’s back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick’s own disapproving mother (Michelle Yeoh) taking aim. And it soon becomes clear that while money can’t buy love, it can definitely complicate things.

...as for mutual adoration guild. I only wish I could also rent some of my Chinese made tools before buying them. This movie has a lot of common characteristics with them. Decent looking at first glance but falls apart as soon as you start using it.

It’s visually very pleasing, but the story feels underdeveloped. I felt like it never really came to a clear resolution. However, the acting was wonderful and the makeup and costumes were gorgeous

This movie is too hyped up and over rated. I do not recommend watching this movie. Doesn’t even deserve one star.

Entertaining film from beginning to end—period. The end.

Wanted to love this but was really disappointed. The main character (guy) doesn’t even look totally Asian. Awkwafina, the girl everyone raves about, was literally an Asian version of Miley Cyrus. Even the clothes weren’t that fabulous. Yay for finally giving Asian actors a movie to shine in, boo for stereotypes and flimsy script.

  • Crappy Movie + Identity Politics = Gold

Let me start by clarifying that I am not some insane bigot who hates this movie because it features Asian actors. I am liberal, well-educated, and work in China. I was incredibly excited to see a movie that would portray a familiar plot-line within the parameters of Chinese cultural expectations. Needless to say, that didn't happen. The reason I hate this movie has nothing to do with personal prejudices and everything to do with the fact that it is terrible, poorly-written, contrived, trash. Basically, what you are watching here is the lowest caliber of rom-com tripe, dressed in the moral superiority of identity politics. Remove the novelty of casting Asians, and this is a 20% on Rotten Tomatoes, at best. The jokes are forced, the dialogue is poorly written, the plot is insultingly uninventive...I mean, jesus christ. This movie might be taught in a class at Harvard Business School entitled: "how to profit off of the uninformed moral righteousness of the masses by feeding them recycled garbage." But other than those things, it was great.

I've seen this movie 3 times. It gets better with each viewing. Even if you're not of East Asian descent, you will identify with the universal themes of family, love, and a demanding mother. Plus, plenty of food porn and a great soundtrack. Something here for everyone!
  • Classy film.

Don’t sleep on this film. A beautiful movie about Love, Values, & Family. Much needed in today’s disposable digital world. Top Class all the way. Bravo 👏 to the entire cast & crew of CRA! Grade: A+

Crazy Rich Asians was totally amazing and even though there were bits that were different than the book it still lived up to every expectation!!! CANT GET ENOUGH OF THIS MOVIE

The book was fun, witty, and exciting. The movie was the opposite! My husband (who hasn’t read the book) kept dozing off. The movie dumbed down all of the characters and made jokes of them. Sooo disappointed. Really want my money back! Don’t bother watching. Just read the book! Trust me it will be worth your time!
  • Perfect for what it sets out to be, and best romantic comedy in over a decade

It’s sweet, emotional, and it really shines a light on one tiny aspect of asian culture; this is NOT meant to be a film about Asians or Asian Americans, but about, well Crazy Rich Asians...which is why I don’t get the criticism (it’s not called “Love in Singapore” so I don’t see why it’s flawed for “omitting” many things about Singapore). Just like the Wolf of Wall Street doesn’t represent all of NY in any era or all of finance, CRA doesn’t represent all Asians or Asian countries. Anyway, the story itself is probably a B+ (comfortably formulaic, it’s a romantic comedy after all) but the overall film gets an A for the production value, the costumes and makeup, the editing, the soundtrack (which had me crying), the acting (Michele Yeoh could be a dark horse candidate for Best Supporting Actress), and of course, the Asian representation. Hard to believe that it had been over 25 years since the last all-Asian major studio film.

  • Best Movie of the Year!

At first I really didn’t want to watch it. I planned on buying the movie just to support asians showing people they are more than a stereotype. Then I decided to watch it. Except for a few scenes that were rushed I felt the movie was written and directed with poise. I was delighted to see it is more than a bunch of rich Asians trying to prove they fit a caucasian narrative. They maintained they’re cultural background and if you look closely you notice several notable history marks that are detailed in background. Such as mixed cultures and history stemming back hundreds or years. I recommend this movie to anyone as it fits multiple dimensional social and cultural outlooks.
